Mapo-Gu: Is your neighborhood serving your soul?
This video was produced as part of the 2025 Seoul Urban Architecture Biennale Community Project.
According to the 2024 Seoul Survey, the Mapo district ranked first in “life satisfaction.”
Curious to find out actual resident sentiments, we isolated the neighborhood of Mapo-gu Subway Exit #1 Station which has the highest residential and commercial density.
The film observes the emotions of 25 residents regarding their daily built environment.
These interviews provide insight behind the everyday scenery, and rather than offer an analysis, provide a glimpse of the lived experience.
The Seongsan-dong residents find deep satisfaction in the comfort of a place that feels like home and the safety of a predictable environment. Yet they also experience frustration from uniform building designs and city noise, and a sense of isolation due to the lack of communal spaces in a neighborhood of many single-person households
본 영상은 2025 서울도시건축비엔날레 창작 커뮤니티 프로젝트의 일환으로 기획되었습니다. 2024년 서울 서베이가 밝힌 '삶의 만족도 1위'의 마포구. 특히 주거 밀집도가 높은 성산동 마포구청역 일대에서 만난 25명 주민의 목소리를 통해, 서울이라는 거대 도시 속 진정한 만족의 본질을 깊이 탐색합니다.
도시의 가치는 단순한 수치나 효율적 설계만으로 온전히 평가될 수 없습니다. 이곳 마포구의 일상적 풍경 뒤에는, 우리가 미처 헤아리지 못했던 주민들의 심오한 경험과 도시에 대한 통찰이 존재합니다. 거시적인 관점에서 진행되는 도시 개발이 간과해 온 미시적 삶의 조건들. 우리는 이제, 그들의 생생한 목소리를 통해 도시의 진정한 의미를 마주합니다.
마포구 성산동 주민들의 이야기는 우리에게 심도 깊은 질문을 던집니다. 그들은 '집 같다'라고 말하는 '편안함' 과 예측 가능한 환경에서 얻는 '안전함' 에서 큰 '만족감' 을 느끼지만, 획일적인 건축 디자인과 도심의 소음에서는 '답답함' 을, 그리고 1인 가구가 많아 교류의 공간 부족에서는 '고립감' 을 느끼기도 했습니다. 도시의 미래를 설계하는 모든 이에게 제안합니다. 진정한 삶의 터전은 과연 무엇이며, 모든 시민의 삶이 만족과 평온을 찾을 수 있도록 우리는 어떤 도시적 환경과 인간적 관계를 함께 구축해 나가야 할까요? 이 질문의 답을 찾는 여정이야말로 우리의 시대적 과제입니다.

Curious to find out actual resident sentiments, we isolated the neighborhood of Chang 2-dong which has the highest residential and commercial density.
The film observes the emotions of 25 residents regarding their daily built environment and on what community means within the megacity of Seoul.
These interviews provide insight behind the everyday scenery, and rather than offer an analysis, provide a glimpse of the lived experience. Here, residents cherish the authenticity of everyday life and feel a sense of belonging, like a hometown nurtured over years. In neighborly exchanges, they find safety. At the same time, they grapple with the constraints of industrial landscapes and the fading of past charm in a swiftly changing environment.

거대한 도시의 스케일 속에서, 개인의 정체성은 때로 흐릿해지곤 합니다. 하지만 이곳 도봉구에는 보이지 않는 강력한 유대감이 흐르고 있습니다. 우리가 간과했던 도시의 진정한 연결고리, 그 안에서 피어나는 공동체의 의미와 서로를 향한 따뜻한 마음. 이제, 그들의 생생한 일상 속에서 그 답을 찾아볼 시간입니다.
도봉구 창2동의 이야기는 우리에게 중요한 통찰을 전합니다. 이곳 주민들은 '사람들이 살기 좋은' '서민다움' 속에서 오래 살면서 형성된 '고향같음' 을 느끼고, 이웃과의 교류 속에서 '안전함' 을 찾습니다. 그러나 산업 지역으로서의 '답답함' 과 급변하는 환경 속에서 옛 정취가 사라지는 아쉬움 또한 공존합니다. 도시의 미래를 설계하는 모든 이에게 제안합니다. 외형적 성장을 넘어, 시민들이 진정한 '고향같음'을 느끼며 '안전함' 속에서 공동체를 형성하고 지속적인 '발전·감사' 를 느낄 수 있는 환경을 위해, 우리는 어떤 심도 있는 고민과 협력적 노력을 기울여 나가야 할까요? 진정한 도시의 가치는 여기에 있습니다.
